I chose South Beach in Miami, Florida as my neighborhood to research. South Beach is commonly known as the destination place for sunshine, beaches, vacationing on spring break, Ocean Drive, etc. Ocean Drive in particular preserved 800+ buildings and structures from 1923 to 1943, that make up the Art Deco Historic District. Although it was nearly demolished, the Miami Design Preservation League helped bring national protection to the architecture. The original Art Deco style has since been celebrated and restored. On the other hand, discovering the history of overconsumption and overpopulation led to the rising of seas and recently the streets. Residents living in high elevated areas are subjected to higher property rates and climate change is the cause. This also created a social divide with of property value. The temporary solution of rising the streets for Miami Beach is estimated to last for the next 50 years or less.
